Freshmen Focus - Trinity Byars & Camar Wheaton

In an age of athletic specialization and territorial coaching versus multi-sport athletes, how great is it to see more freshmen succeed on the track who also succeed in other sports? This week's edition of Freshmen Focus highlights two youngsters who not only play other sports, but also do more than simply contribute to their respective high school teams - they excel.

Let's start with Shelton's Trinity Byars, who won the 100 and 200 at this past weekend's Greenhill Relays. She won the 100 in a time of 12.12 and the 200 in a time of 25.51. Trinity's 100 time is not only tops among Texas freshmen, but it's #14 among all Texans, tied with Dallas Carter's Sha'Carri Richardson. Her 200 time is #6 among Texas freshmen.

While Byars may be a rising start on the track, she's already earned her stripes on the basketball court, leading Shelton into the playoffs at 4.8 assists per game. For her efforts, she earned TAPPS 4A District 3 1st Team All-District honors along with being named Freshman of the Year for TAPPS 4A-3. (picture by TTFCA)

Camar Wheaton of Garland Lakeview Centennial is earning himself quite a reputation for his football exploits. In a Class 6A Division I Bi-District Playoff loss to Dallas Jesuit (79-55), the fabulous freshman ran for 445 yards and 5 touchdowns. He's already received offers from TCU and Arkansas.

Listed at 6-0, 185 pounds on Hudl, the speedy back posted a 10.99 100 to capture first place at this weekend's Allen Eagle Relays. He also took second in the 200 at 22.18 (#48 in Texas) and third in the long jump at 21-03.50.

Both Trinity and Camar are multi-sport athletes making a name for themselves on the track as well as the basketball court and football field, proof positive that quality training crosses over and allows one to succeed in more than one sport. Good luck to both of them!
